State Beach Series - Race 1 Report

Steven Kent won the opening race of the State Beach Series on Takapuna Beach on Tuesday evening (1st Nov) in challenging conditions more suited to wind & kite surfing; 1½ metre swells and winds gusting up to 35 knots.

Kent heads to Warendorf, Germany later this month with the NZ Surf Lifesaving team to compete at the International German Cup before continuing his buildup to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

Rangitoto College student, Danielle McKenzie relished the conditions to be the first woman home. An already seasoned triathlete at 17 with a silver medal under her belt in the World U19 Age Group Champs, she too heads to international competition at the end of the month as a member of the NZ Surf Lifesaving A team competing in two Australian ocean/beach carnivals.

Father and son Olympians Ian and Steven Ferguson fought the waves in the 5km Surf Ski Paddle. They've been competing in the event since it began in 2005 and while dad was just happy to be there, Steven, who has just taken up the position as coach at the Piha Surf Lifesaving Club used the race to begin his season's training for the London Olympics. Travis Mitchell was home first, 47 seconds ahead of Ferguson.
