Winners of the inaugural 2009 New Zealand Sport and Recreation Sector Awards were:

Event Excellence Award - FIFA U17 Women's Football World Cup, New Zealand Football

New Zealand Football delivered an exceptional event in hosting the 2008 FIFA U17 Women's Football World Cup. They smashed attendance records, enjoyed extensive media coverage, and left a strong legacy for women's football in New Zealand. Read more about New Zealand Football's goals and challenges.

Project Collaboration Award - Project Energize

Innovation Award - Mates in Bowls, Bowls New Zealand

Lifetime Achievement Award

Three leaders in sport and recreation were also honoured for their dedication and long-term service:

  • Lois Muir OBE, DCNZM for services to Netball
  • Peter Fitzsimmons OBE for services to Surf Lifesaving, Triathlon and Surfing
  • Ralph Roberts MBE for services to Yachting
