An epic challenge to break the New Zealand record for running a mile will be a fitting finale to a significant International Track Meet programme held in Christchurch on Friday 13 March.

SBS Bank is pleased to be able to support such a notable and worthy sporting event as sponsors of the SBS Bank Under-19 Men's 3000m National Championships during the programme.

SBS Bank's Manchester Street branch manager Mark Reid hasn't stopped running since he was a kid and he is looking forward to seeing New Zealand's very own Olympic Games 1500m bronze medalist Nick Willis break John Walker's resident and all comers national mile record.

However, the best time set on New Zealand soil of 3min 50.60sec, set by Walker in Auckland in 1981, will not only be chased by Willis but a world class field, including Britain's Andrew Baddeley, who was the world's fastest miler last year.

The record breaking mile attempt will be the feature finale to an evening of top-class track and field incorporating leading children's and secondary schools relay teams, paralympic, provincial, national and international athletes, Mr Reid said.

"It's a promoter and supporter's dream to have such an international, world class field featuring in the record breaking mile attempt and to see Willis in action when he's at the pinnacle of his career.

"With athletes from England, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand already confirmed to compete at the meet, it truly will be a great night's entertainment," he said.

"We're stoked at SBS Bank to be able to support such a big community event and help make the International Track Meet the success it deserves to be."
